As with many bindings in this new genre of tele bindings using the 2-pin tech toe it shows much promise, but the bindings tested were still in beta form. Two options to improve lateral stability at the heel: i by locking it with a minimalist AT low-tech heel, or… ii using a heel stabilizer to improve free heel lateral stiffness. There was little question the snow shedding spacer would reduce snow build up.

Sep 16 Last week Moonlight Mountain Gear unveiled a revised website showing the first production versions of their tech style bindings with an optional heel stabilizer or a lighweight tech-style heel. As reported last season, the prototype bindings skied well but there were several unfinished details. Based on images of the final product it appears that the essential elements of the Tele Pure and Tele Rando bindings have the same functionality as the prototypes. Lots of tweaks to the final toe. Higher, stronger, and resistant to icing. What is not visible from the CAD drawing is the inclusion of a soft rib of plastic underneath the toe arms to prevent ice formation. Longer springs from Voile allow more tele ROM, and a smoother flex. The roofed spacer between the cable pivot and the toe has been replaced with a plastic cover over the cable mounting post. It has a soft, slightly spongy feel that prevents snow from building up underfoot.

First Look: Moonlight’s Tele Tech Bindings

Moonlight is a niche Norwegian brand specialised in producing specialized equipment for the mountains. As well as super-powerful headlaamps and ultralight touring skis, Moonlight also manufacture an NTN 2-pin telemark binding, the Pure Tele. Remove the springs and you have a lightweight touring binding with all the freedom of AT insert bindings for the uphill, then clip in the Hardwire springs when it's time to tele on down. The Pure Tele offers efficient telemark touring and good downhill control. Binding activity can be adjusted depending upon which of the three slots under the baseplate are used to connect the springs. Choose the most forward slot for maximum activity, the furthest back if you prefer more neutral tele bindings. The toepiece comes complete with a slot for accepting Dynafit crampons. Note that due to the height of the baseplate you may want to add a spacer to the ski crampons to increase crampons "bite" into the snow. These bindings do not have ski brakes so it is essentail to use a safety leash. Skip to main content.

We have gotten some questions about our binding and I will now give an in depth explanation of the Pure Tele binding. I have marked the binding with several red arrows to highlight what I am writing about. You see the images at the bottom. I start with the front and work my way back. The Front binding is totally redesigned for this season. The front opener and closing mechanism is now reduces from a lot of small piece to one piece, easy to operate, solid and well-functioning. Underneath the front opener you see a hole for the ski leash.

There is a circle right behind the hole of the ski leash; here we will insert a plastic part that will help shoot out all snow that is inside the binding when you open and close the binding. There are extra big holes under the pin arms to help get the snow out from underneath the binding.

Ice in this area is the most important factor for having problems closing the binding correctly and is also the main reason along with ice in the pin holes for prerelease out of a tech binding. The arm that connects the opener to the springs is made from solid steel, no breaking parts there. There will be a guide on the arm that will help you align the boot correctly to make it easier to step into the binding. The springs in the binding are a little bit strong than the norm to prevent any unwanted release and create a more secure feeling while skiing.

The pins in the front binding are getting an extra treatment to make the stronger and last longer. This is done to make the binding lighter for you to walk up the mountain. Less weight on the ski is always a big plus. The cables you store in your back pack while hiking. When you reach the top you hook on the cables, step into the binding and attach the springs for a wonderful decent! The back binding has a 5 cm heel ricer, only one and it should fit most climbing terrain.

The climber is designed to max go 25 degrees steep with a good walking angle. The heel riser in not in the image shown here. The heel plate has two pins sticking up; if you see the two images you see how the pins interact with the boot to stop all sideways movement. If you take a look at the binding from the side as you see it in the last image you will see that I have marked it with three arrows. These are the pressure points of the boot against the binding. You will have three points that transfers the power onto the ski creating a new benchmark for all bindings when I come to power transfer to the ski.

The heel is not locked, but in a parallel turn you will have better power transfer than all other tech bindings out there. A skilled technical skier will be able to feel how the binding works the ski and the connection with the boot and ski is improved a lot.

This will enable you to control your out ski way better than before making it easier to ski more difficult terrain and difficult snow. Icey snow has always been super hard for me to ski, but with the new binding I have no problems with this anymore.

I can even do a tele turn on the powder skis. And last — the new springs specially made for Moonlight. The springs with the longest travel made for tech bindings. Super nice tension and long travel lets you drop the knee as you are used to. The last question we get is, does this feel like a NTN binding? No, it does not. Think 75mm feeling because of the long travel springs and then add the stability of something that you have never encountered before and you have the Pure Tele binding.

Pure Joy wrapped up in a Telemark binding. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Weight in touring mode is around grams. Weight in riding mode is around grams due to the extra-long travel of the springs. Jump to. Sections of this page. Accessibility Help. Email or Phone Password Forgot account? Sign Up.
