Girls locker room magazine
They are now using the family changing room to change in and out of their swimsuits, but it is not big enough for all 18 girls. The complexity of this situation reveals some of the struggles that public institutions are facing as they implement policies that aim to ensure the rights of transgender individuals. And now these issues are about to go national. On May 13, the Obama administration warned public schools that they must allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of the gender with which they identify. Even in states that have had more progressive gender identity policies in place for a while, like New York, unforeseen headaches have arisen. Not all restrooms are alike. A bathroom with individual stalls that offer some privacy, for example, is different from a locker room or changing room. A locker room in a school is different from a changing room in a public facility such as a recreation center or local pool, which people of all ages use at the same time. In some locker rooms, girls who are exquisitely self-conscious about their bodies—and often uncomfortable about the opposite sex—are going to change before playing sports. Meeting the needs of those girls and of trans women in various stages of gender transition can pose logistical issues.
Obviously, the non-denialist approach was smarter, because people are happy to view a male locker room — whether literal or figurative — as a place beyond not only rules but meaning. Originating in Russian social media , they evoke male nostalgia for the warlike changing periods before and after gym class, when minimal supervision, homosocial friction, excess energy and pubescent anxiety created a singular dude-stravaganza.
Months ago, the magazine Science published an article that talked about how girls learn to devalue their own gender around the age of 6. Being an age in which stereotypes arise and stick, a series of experiments showed how girls were more inclined to choose boys or men as more successful and brilliant. One of the tests consisted of the read of a neutral description of a successful individual. But this devaluation of their own gender can imply that their aspirations in life may differ from what they should be. You aim to be a doctor, which you are familiar with. We wish to become what we see, what we are around. Little girls learn to hate themselves at a very young age, just like they learn these gender stereotypes. No doubt: these girls will become obsessed with their appearance, with looking like these unreal role models, with being skinnier, toner, prettier. I must say I have never been the skinny type, I was always more of a big kid. When I was 12 I was pretty overweight, but came across a basketball coach who took my fear and 20 pounds of my weight.

The Clark County School District disagrees. Other people in my class told me that they felt uncomfortable, too, last year. The parent talked with a group of female students in the PE class about the situation. He told me that was their opinion. Expect situations like this to multiply if the district decides to use feelings to determine gender instead of an objective biological standard. Last year, the district created a secretive transgender working group stacked with advocates of radical transgender ideology. The radical left assumes that gender is assigned at birth, not revealed by biology. The group looked at policies from liberal bastions such as Los Angeles and Minnesota. Those policies included allowing a boy who identifies as a girl to share a hotel room with a biological girl on an overnight trip without her parents knowing. In November and December, the district held a series of public meetings on whether or not to implement a policy.
